Our students benefit from a combination of evidence-based clinical therapies, experiential programming, and academic support, provided by licensed professionals and highly-trained staff in a structured, supervised, and welcoming environment.
We provide a safe place for teens to stabilize, learn to manage distressing feelings and situations, and reconnect with family, all without losing academic momentum. We use predictable routines, strengths-based coaching, and coordinated school support to increase positive treatment outcomes.
Our mission is to guide children and families into cultivating the kinds of lives and relationships we are intended to have—lives that are satisfying, healthy, filled with hope, and allow for healing and growth.
We bring every aspect of a student’s life under one roof—our 25-acre campus. BlueRock’s holistic model ensures seamless, consistent support from a team fully invested in each student’s journey.
- Integrated Clinical Care: Our on-site licensed clinicians provide continuous, trauma-informed care, eliminating the need for external appointments and focusing on building a young person’s sense of agency.
- On-Campus Academics: Our accredited, on-site school (Bearwallow Academy) with in-person instructors ensures that students stay on track and find academic success in a supportive environment.
- Experiential Programming: Our therapists and recreation staff lead hands-on activities that help students move beyond their comfort zones, learning to collaborate and problem-solve in real-world situations.
We support teen males experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma-related stress, self-harm/suicidal ideation, ADHD/ADD, behavioral challenges, family conflict, learning differences, and related concerns. Many students have co-occurring needs (e.g., grief, experimentation with substance use, executive-function gaps), and our program is designed to address the whole person.
BlueRock Behavioral Health is located in Bat Cave, North Carolina, on a 25‑acre campus in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We are approximately 40 minutes from Asheville just off HWY 74A.
Our location provides serene, natural spaces for outdoor and experiential programming while remaining convenient to families traveling to campus. Our campus is designed to encourage students to spend time in nature, featuring outdoor gathering spots and places for quietly enjoying the beauty of the Western North Carolina.
A multidisciplinary group of licensed clinicians, teachers, nurses, administrators, and residential counselors trained in adolescent development, safety, and trauma-informed care—working together with families and community providers.
All staff complete extensive training in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) that focuses on safety, anxiety reduction, and trauma-informed care to prevent injury and foster a respectful environment. Staff are also certified in First Aid and CPR and must pass a criminal background check. Most have experience working with adolescents or hold undergraduate degrees in psychology or related fields.
Our program is designed to be completed in 90-180 days. The actual length of stay for a student is individualized, tied to clinical goals and academic progress. We review progress frequently and plan for step-down care early.
Safety is built into our program model. BlueRock staff are constantly aware of and monitoring students on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We provide structured days, consistent expectations, and medication and wellness oversight, paired with a home-like environment to balance accountability with compassion and belonging.
Clinical
Our clients often face challenges related to depression, anxiety, trauma, body image, self-harm, suicidal ideation, family conflict, ADHD/ADD, academic struggles, grief, low self-esteem, adoption and attachment issues, substance experimentation, and high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (ASD 1).

Unlike most Level II programs, BlueRock provides this care on a beautiful, 25-acre campus with separate buildings for dorms, schooling, clinical programming, dining, and recreation. We have licensed clinicians, NC-licensed teacher-led academics, and experiential programming all on site.
Level II is community-based residential care. Daily routines emphasize skill-building (emotion regulation, communication, decision-making), healthy habits, and guided practice in real-world settings.
PRTF/hospital programs are more intensive, secure settings for acute stabilization.
We help families understand which level fits current needs.
We blend skills-based and family-focused approaches (e.g., CBT/DBT-informed groups, motivational interviewing, parent coaching) with experiential learning, fitness, and academics to reinforce coping and communication.
We measure a student’s progress through individual treatment plans, classroom benchmarks, behavior/mood assessments, and family feedback. The team reviews progress regularly to guide step-downs and tailor aftercare.

Student Life
To keep our students focused and accountable, days at BlueRock are highly structured, supervised, scheduled, and supportive. At the same time, we build in opportunities for individualized therapy and other care tailored for each student’s specific needs and progression. Outdoor adventure and experiential learning are also woven into each week’s schedule so students can challenge themselves, collaborate, and apply therapeutic skills in new ways.
Students live together in a dormitory with group common areas designed to feel warm and inviting and a mix of single- and double-occupancy bedrooms. They participate in on-site school, individual, group and family therapy, experiential programming, community meals, fitness, recreation, and other group activities in a variety of buildings and sports facilities on the BlueRock property. We encourage students to spend lots of time outdoors enjoying the natural beauty of our 25-acre campus in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Students are not allowed to have a personal computer or phone while enrolled at BlueRock. Students do have monitored access to desktop computers for academic and therapeutic work. Devices are structured and supervised to support learning and safety. We teach healthy technology habits and focus attention on schoolwork and skill-building.
Academics
Yes. Bearwallow Academy is our fully-accredited and licensed on-site school. Students attend in-person, instructor-led classes in a traditional classroom setting. Classes are small, typically with no more than 8 students per class. We coordinate credit transfer with home districts and support IEP/504 accommodations so academic progress continues during treatment.
Yes. Bearwallow Academy, our on-campus school at BlueRock, is fully accredited as a non-public school in the state of North Carolina. Accreditation supports credit integrity and smooth transitions back to home schools. Classes completed at Bearwallow Academy may transfer for graduation credit.
At BlueRock, academics and clinical care run on one coordinated plan. Teachers, therapists, and residential staff share goals and daily notes so the same skills your teen learns in session are reinforced in class and in the residence. Using consistent language and cues across the whole day helps progress stick in real life.
We coordinate transcripts, syllabi, and credit mapping with your child’s school district. Before discharge, we provide documentation so earned credits and competencies transfer cleanly.
Absolutely. We review existing plans, implement accommodations, and share progress updates. If testing or updates are needed, we work with your district on next steps.
Students start with a morning check-in, attend core academics, rotate through gym/arts/electives, and use study hall to complete assignments—interwoven with therapeutic groups and movement breaks to support focus and regulation.
Teachers and clinicians set aligned goals (attendance, task initiation, organization, emotion regulation). Wins in the classroom are reinforced in therapy and carried into home routines during step-down planning.
Yes. Hands-on electives and vocational experiences help students explore interests, build confidence, and practice teamwork, problem-solving, and communication.
We partner with your child’s school district to schedule testing, support accommodations, and ensure test results are sent where they need to go.
Family Involvement & Aftercare
We consider parents and family to be essential members of the treatment team and critical to the long-term success of our program. We keep you informed, involved, and equipped to support your teen’s growth. Families participate in weekly family therapy sessions and parent coaching and receive frequent updates from the treatment team. Additionally, we want and encourage families to visit their students on campus.
From admission onward, we plan for the transition home, aligning expectations and building skills that stick. We coordinate a personalized aftercare plan—outpatient therapy, med management, school supports, and community resources—so gains continue at home. We also help families schedule follow-ups and clarify what success looks like in the first weeks after discharge.

Yes. We accept NC Medicaid, including managed care plans. Coverage typically requires a medical necessity review. We handle the paperwork and coordinate with your care manager; families must keep Medicaid eligibility active throughout care. We are an established provider with Vaya Health and Healthy Blue Care Together, and we have worked with Partners Health Management and Alliance Health.
Many private or employer-sponsored plans cover Level II when medically necessary. Coverage varies by plan, network status, and clinical criteria. We are considered out-of-network for non-Medicaid insurance plans/providers. If insurance does not cover some or all services, we offer self-pay options and transparent estimates.
Common out-of-pocket items include deductibles, copays, coinsurance, non-covered services, and any fees not included by your plan (e.g., certain assessments or supplies).
